The long-awaited confirmation has finally arrived: Jim Carrey will reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in the next chapter of Sonic. After months of speculation and uncertainty, Paramount has officially announced the iconic actor's return to the franchise.

What will happen in Sonic 3?

The news was revealed during CinemaCon, where a teaser trailer for Sonic 3 was presented. Although Carrey was not physically present at the event, his on-screen presence as Dr. Robotnik was clearly visible in the teaser, causing excitement among fans of the series. The Sonic 3 teaser also revealed a new look for Dr. Robotnik, who appears chubbier and jokes about bingeing on carbs. The news of Carrey's return to the role of Dr. Robotnik came as a big surprise to fans, considering that during the promotion of Sonic 2, the actor had expressed the idea of retiring.

The plot of Sonic 3 is still unknown, but we know Carrey won't be the only familiar face making his return. The cast will also include Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Idris Elba, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, Tom Butler, and Tika Sumpter. Before the release of Sonic 3, the Knuckles spin-off series will be released. Scheduled to debut before the third film, the series will premiere exclusively on Paramount+.

Additionally, executive producer, Toby Ascher, revealed ambitious plans for the film franchise, comparing it to the large-scale events of the Avengers films.
