When it came to the Super Bowl LX broadcast, lots of high intensity shows were calling the shots. However, DC studios took a different approach on Sunday during the Puppy Bowl. The teaser for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow played hard to the bond between a young & battered Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) and Krypto - a rescue pup found in the midst of Argo City's destruction - this time with some real emotional depth to it. Rather than just a generic action hero, they're trying to spin the June 26 2026 release as a personal "girl and dog" adventure rather than just another caped crusader movie.
The footage we see is pretty intense - more so than we were expecting from DC, with James Gunn promising a really cynical take on the character and it delivers - check out the standout bit of dialogue where Alcock's Kara is straight up at odds with her cousin's views - "He sees the good in everyone, I see the truth."
This version of Supergirl is a world away from her usual optimistic self - she's been hardened by the memories of the world ending, and it's pretty clear this isn't going to be another feel-good story. With Craig Gillespie at the helm, visually the whole thing has a real "Space Western" feel - with Alcock getting into some real scrapes on a cosmic level - think True Grit, not Superman.
Even with some big budget action - sneak peeks of Lobo and Krem, we still get a strong emotional core here - the bond that's formed between Kara and Krypto in the ruins of Krypton. DC has decided to go for a heart-wrenching Puppy Bowl ad over a standard Super Bowl sizzle - they're betting that Alcock's "Woman of Tomorrow" will win over audiences by being raw and real - not just her powers, but her messy humanity. In a crowded 2026 slate, this "tougher" take might just give the DCU what they need to stand out from the crowd - especially with them trying to differentiate between their two Kryptonian heroes.
